On the Schwarz algorithms for the elliptic exterior boundary value problems

Faker Ben BelgacemMiche FourniéNabil GmatiFaten Jelassi — 2005

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

Tuning the alternating Schwarz method to the exterior problems is the subject of this paper. We present the original algorithm and we propose a modification of it, so that the solution of the subproblem involving the condition at infinity has an explicit integral representation formulas while the solution of the other subproblem, set in a bounded domain, is approximated by classical variational methods. We investigate many of the advantages of the new Schwarz approach: a geometrical convergence...

Singular perturbation for the Dirichlet boundary control of elliptic problems

Faker Ben BelgacemHenda El FekihHejer Metoui — 2003

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

A current procedure that takes into account the Dirichlet boundary condition with non-smooth data is to change it into a Robin type condition by introducing a penalization term; a major effect of this procedure is an easy implementation of the boundary condition. In this work, we deal with an optimal control problem where the control variable is the Dirichlet data. We describe the Robin penalization, and we bound the gap between the penalized and the non-penalized boundary controls for the small...

Total overlapping Schwarz' preconditioners for elliptic problems

Faker Ben BelgacemNabil GmatiFaten Jelassi — 2011

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

A variant of the Total Overlapping Schwarz (TOS) method has been introduced in [Ben Belgacem , 336 (2003) 277–282] as an iterative algorithm to approximate the absorbing boundary condition, in unbounded domains. That same method turns to be an efficient tool to make numerical zooms in regions of a particular interest. The TOS method enjoys, then, the ability to compute small structures one wants to capture and the reliability to obtain the behavior of the solution at infinity, when handling exterior...

Automatic simplification of Darcy’s equations with pressure dependent permeability

Etienne AhusbordeMejdi AzaïezFaker Ben BelgacemChristine Bernardi — 2013

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

We consider the flow of a viscous incompressible fluid in a rigid homogeneous porous medium provided with mixed boundary conditions. Since the boundary pressure can present high variations, the permeability of the medium also depends on the pressure, so that the model is nonlinear. estimates allow us to omit this dependence where the pressure does not vary too much. We perform the numerical analysis of a spectral element discretization of the simplified model. Finally we propose a strategy which...

A finite element discretization of the contact between two membranes

Faker Ben BelgacemChristine BernardiAdel BlouzaMartin Vohralík — 2009

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

From the fundamental laws of elasticity, we write a model for the contact between two membranes and we perform the analysis of the corresponding system of variational inequalities. We propose a finite element discretization of this problem and prove its well-posedness. We also establish a priori and a posteriori error estimates.

Optimal convergence rates of mortar finite element methods for second-order elliptic problems

Faker Ben BelgacemPadmanabhan SeshaiyerManil Suri — 2010

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

We present an improved, near-optimal error estimate for a non-conforming finite element method, called the mortar method (M0). We also present a new mortaring technique, called the mortar method (MP), and derive , and error estimates for it, in the presence of quasiuniform and non-quasiuniform meshes. Our theoretical results, augmented by the computational evidence we present, show that like (M0), (MP) is also a viable mortaring technique for the method.
