Non-regularity for Banach function algebras

J. FeinsteinD. Somerset — 2000

Studia Mathematica

Let A be a unital Banach function algebra with character space Φ A . For x Φ A , let M x and J x be the ideals of functions vanishing at x and in a neighbourhood of x, respectively. It is shown that the hull of J x is connected, and that if x does not belong to the Shilov boundary of A then the set y Φ A : M x J y has an infinite connected subset. Various related results are given.

Trivial Jensen measures without regularity

J. F. Feinstein — 2001

Studia Mathematica

In this note we construct Swiss cheeses X such that R(X) is non-regular but such that R(X) has no non-trivial Jensen measures. We also construct a non-regular uniform algebra with compact, metrizable character space such that every point of the character space is a peak point.

Swiss cheeses, rational approximation and universal plane curves

J. F. FeinsteinM. J. Heath — 2010

Studia Mathematica

We consider the compact plane sets known as Swiss cheese sets, which are a useful source of examples in the theory of uniform algebras and rational approximation. We develop a theory of allocation maps connected to such sets and we use this theory to modify examples previously constructed in the literature to obtain examples homeomorphic to the Sierpiński carpet. Our techniques also allow us to avoid certain technical difficulties in the literature.
