On partial orderings having precalibre-ℵ₁ and fragments of Martin's axiom

Joan BagariaSaharon Shelah — 2016

Fundamenta Mathematicae

We define a countable antichain condition (ccc) property for partial orderings, weaker than precalibre-ℵ₁, and show that Martin's axiom restricted to the class of partial orderings that have the property does not imply Martin's axiom for σ-linked partial orderings. This yields a new solution to an old question of the first author about the relative strength of Martin's axiom for σ-centered partial orderings together with the assertion that every Aronszajn tree is special. We also answer a question...

Definable orthogonality classes in accessible categories are small

Joan BagariaCarles CasacubertaA. R. D. MathiasJiří Rosický — 2015

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

We lower substantially the strength of the assumptions needed for the validity of certain results in category theory and homotopy theory which were known to follow from Vopěnka’s principle. We prove that the necessary large-cardinal hypotheses depend on the complexity of the formulas defining the given classes, in the sense of the Lévy hierarchy. For example, the statement that, for a class 𝒮 of morphisms in a locally presentable category 𝒞 of structures, the orthogonal class of objects is a small-orthogonality...
