Józef Marcinkiewicz (1910-1940) - on the centenary of his birth

Lech Maligranda — 2011

Banach Center Publications

Józef Marcinkiewicz’s (1910-1940) name is not known by many people, except maybe a small group of mathematicians, although his influence on the analysis and probability theory of the twentieth century was enormous. This survey of his life and work is in honour of the 100 t h anniversary of his birth and 70 t h anniversary of his death. The discussion is divided into two periods of Marcinkiewicz’s life. First, 1910-1933, that is, from his birth to his graduation from the University of Stefan Batory in Vilnius,...

Władysław Orlicz (1903-1990) - Polish mathematician

Lech Maligranda — 2009

Banach Center Publications

This is a brief biography of the Polish mathematician Władysław Orlicz (mostly known for Orlicz spaces), one of the members of the famous Lwów School of Mathematics (Polish School of Analysis in Lwów) who after World War II organized the Poznań School of Mathematics. This biography also includes his scientific achievements and many official scientific activities (honors and awards, membership in various scientific societies and editorial boards). There is a special section about Orlicz's connection...

Antiquitates Mathematicae

Karol Hertz was a Polish mathematician, pedagogue and journalist in natural science. In years 1862-1866 studied at theWarsaw Main School at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, finishing with his master in 1866. In 1871 he received Ph. D. from the University of Halle and from 1867 he was working at the Second Gimnazjum inWarsaw. He has written three monographs, three text-books, some articles in mathematics and several articles of scientific character published in the journals Nature and Industry...

Honorary doctorates of mathematicians at the University of Poznań in 1919-2019

Lech Maligranda — 2019

Antiquitates Mathematicae

In the years 1933--2013 at the University of Poznań was awarded nine honorary doctorates for mathematicians, while two other candidates did not obtain the approval of a higher authority. Mathematicians from Poland and abroad received them. The purpose of this work is to provide information on nine mathematicians who were given the title and two persons who were refused. An important part of this description are photos attached to it.

SZEREGI W PRACACH EULERA

Lech Maligranda — 2008

Antiquitates Mathematicae

Mathematics at the Conventions of Polish Naturalists and Physicians 1869--1937

Lech Maligranda — 2019

Antiquitates Mathematicae

In the years 1869--1937, there were 15 Conventions of Polish Naturalists and Physicians. Since 1875, naturalists who have discussed in their several sections participated in the conventions. Mathematical conventions started in 1881 and finished in 1933. Three pre-war conventions: 1,900 in Krakow, 1907 in Lviv and 1911 in Krakow, gathered for over 1000 participants. At eight Congresses, starting from Congress IV in 1884, there were mathematical sections with lectures of mathematicians. It was then...

Eustachy Żyliński (1889-1954)

Lech Maligranda — 2009

Antiquitates Mathematicae

Eustachy Żyliński was a Polish mathematician, working in number theory, algebra, logic and foundations of mathematics. He has written over 20 scientific papers and 6 text-books. In the period 1919-1939 he was working at the University of Jan Kazimierz in Lwów and was a memeber of the so-called Lwów School of Mathematics. After the war, in the period 1946-1951, he was working at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice.

Weighted inequalities for monotone and concave functions

Hans HeinigLech Maligranda — 1995

Studia Mathematica

Characterizations of weight functions are given for which integral inequalities of monotone and concave functions are satisfied. The constants in these inequalities are sharp and in the case of concave functions, constitute weighted forms of Favard-Berwald inequalities on finite and infinite intervals. Related inequalities, some of Hardy type, are also given.

Order convexity and concavity of Lorentz spaces Λ p , w , 0 < p < ∞

Anna KamińskaLech Maligranda — 2004

Studia Mathematica

We study order convexity and concavity of quasi-Banach Lorentz spaces Λ p , w , where 0 < p < ∞ and w is a locally integrable positive weight function. We show first that Λ p , w contains an order isomorphic copy of l p . We then present complete criteria for lattice convexity and concavity as well as for upper and lower estimates for Λ p , w . We conclude with a characterization of the type and cotype of Λ p , w in the case when Λ p , w is a normable space.

Jan Ptaszycki (1854-1912)

Lech MaligrandaJan Strelcyn — 2018

Antiquitates Mathematicae

Jan Ptaszycki was a Polish mathematician working in St. Petersburg in the period 1876–1912. In Poland, he is forgotten, and in Russia considered generally for Russian mathematician, known there as Ivan Lvovich Ptaszycki. There is no article about it on Polish , while there are three articles in Russian. In historical-mathematical Russian literature, depending on the author, it is reported that Ptaszycki was a Russian mathematician or, more rarely, a Polish mathematician as, for example, in [Lo15a]...
