On mesh independence and Newton-type methods

Owe Axelsson — 1993

Applications of Mathematics

Mesh-independent convergence of Newton-type methods for the solution of nonlinear partial differential equations is discussed. First, under certain local smoothness assumptions, it is shown that by properly relating the mesh parameters H and h for a coarse and a fine discretization mesh, it suffices to compute the solution of the nonlinear equation on the coarse mesh and subsequently correct it once using the linearized (Newton) equation on the fine mesh. In this way the iteration error will be...

Preconditioning of two-by-two block matrix systems with square matrix blocks, with applications

Owe Axelsson — 2017

Applications of Mathematics

Two-by-two block matrices of special form with square matrix blocks arise in important applications, such as in optimal control of partial differential equations and in high order time integration methods. Two solution methods involving very efficient preconditioned matrices, one based on a Schur complement reduction of the given system and one based on a transformation matrix with a perturbation of one of the given matrix blocks are presented. The first method involves an additional inner solution...

Harmonic averages, exact difference schemes and local Green’s functions in variable coefficient PDE problems

Owe AxelssonJános Karátson — 2013

Open Mathematics

A brief survey is given to show that harmonic averages enter in a natural way in the numerical solution of various variable coefficient problems, such as in elliptic and transport equations, also of singular perturbation types. Local Green’s functions used as test functions in the Petrov-Galerkin finite element method combined with harmonic averages can be very efficient and are related to exact difference schemes.

Two simple derivations of universal bounds for the C.B.S. inequality constant

Owe AxelssonRadim Blaheta — 2004

Applications of Mathematics

Universal bounds for the constant in the strengthened Cauchy-Bunyakowski-Schwarz inequality for piecewise linear-linear and piecewise quadratic-linear finite element spaces in 2 space dimensions are derived. The bounds hold for arbitrary shaped triangles, or equivalently, arbitrary matrix coefficients for both the scalar diffusion problems and the elasticity theory equations.
