On decompositions of Banach spaces into a sum of operator ranges

V. FonfV. Shevchik — 1999

Studia Mathematica

It is proved that a separable Banach space X admits a representation X = X 1 + X 2 as a sum (not necessarily direct) of two infinite-codimensional closed subspaces X 1 and X 2 if and only if it admits a representation X = A 1 ( Y 1 ) + A 2 ( Y 2 ) as a sum (not necessarily direct) of two infinite-codimensional operator ranges. Suppose that a separable Banach space X admits a representation as above. Then it admits a representation X = T 1 ( Z 1 ) + T 2 ( Z 2 ) such that neither of the operator ranges T 1 ( Z 1 ) , T 2 ( Z 2 ) contains an infinite-dimensional closed subspace if and only...

Extension of smooth subspaces in Lindenstrauss spaces

V. P. FonfP. Wojtaszczyk — 2014

Studia Mathematica

It follows from our earlier results [Israel J. Math., to appear] that in the Gurariy space G every finite-dimensional smooth subspace is contained in a bigger smooth subspace. We show that this property does not characterise the Gurariy space among Lindenstrauss spaces and we provide various examples to show that C(K) spaces do not have this property.

Stochastic approximation properties in Banach spaces

V. P. FonfW. B. JohnsonG. PisierD. Preiss — 2003

Studia Mathematica

We show that a Banach space X has the stochastic approximation property iff it has the stochasic basis property, and these properties are equivalent to the approximation property if X has nontrivial type. If for every Radon probability on X, there is an operator from an L p space into X whose range has probability one, then X is a quotient of an L p space. This extends a theorem of Sato’s which dealt with the case p = 2. In any infinite-dimensional Banach space X there is a compact set K so that for...
