A multilevel correction type of adaptive finite element method for Steklov eigenvalue problems

Lin, QunXie, Hehu — 2012

Applications of Mathematics 2012

Adaptive finite element method based on multilevel correction scheme is proposed to solve Steklov eigenvalue problems. In this method, each adaptive step involves solving associated boundary value problems on the adaptive partitions and small scale eigenvalue problems on the coarsest partitions. Solving eigenvalue problem in the finest partition is not required. Hence the efficiency of solving Steklov eigenvalue problems can be improved to the similar efficiency of the adaptive finite element method...

A parallel method for population balance equations based on the method of characteristics

Li, YuLin, QunXie, Hehu — 2013

Applications of Mathematics 2013

In this paper, we present a parallel scheme to solve the population balance equations based on the method of characteristics and the finite element discretization. The application of the method of characteristics transform the higher dimensional population balance equation into a series of lower dimensional convection-diffusion-reaction equations which can be solved in a parallel way. Some numerical results are presented to show the accuracy and efficiency.

A Superconvergence result for mixed finite element approximations of the eigenvalue problem

Qun LinHehu Xie — 2012

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

In this paper, we present a superconvergence result for the mixed finite element approximations of general second order elliptic eigenvalue problems. It is known that a superconvergence result has been given by Durán [9 (1999) 1165–1178] and Gardini [43 (2009) 853–865] for the lowest order Raviart-Thomas approximation of Laplace eigenvalue problems. In this work, we introduce a new way to derive the superconvergence of general second order elliptic eigenvalue problems by general mixed finite element...

A full multigrid method for semilinear elliptic equation

Fei XuHehu Xie — 2017

Applications of Mathematics

A full multigrid finite element method is proposed for semilinear elliptic equations. The main idea is to transform the solution of the semilinear problem into a series of solutions of the corresponding linear boundary value problems on the sequence of finite element spaces and semilinear problems on a very low dimensional space. The linearized boundary value problems are solved by some multigrid iterations. Besides the multigrid iteration, all other efficient numerical methods can also serve as...

Acceleration of two-grid stabilized mixed finite element method for the Stokes eigenvalue problem

Xinlong FengZhifeng WengHehu Xie — 2014

Applications of Mathematics

This paper provides an accelerated two-grid stabilized mixed finite element scheme for the Stokes eigenvalue problem based on the pressure projection. With the scheme, the solution of the Stokes eigenvalue problem on a fine grid is reduced to the solution of the Stokes eigenvalue problem on a much coarser grid and the solution of a linear algebraic system on the fine grid. By solving a slightly different linear problem on the fine grid, the new algorithm significantly improves the theoretical error...

Postprocessing and higher order convergence for the mixed finite element approximations of the Stokes eigenvalue problems

Hongtao ChenShanghui JiaHehu Xie — 2009

Applications of Mathematics

In this paper we propose a method for improving the convergence rate of the mixed finite element approximations for the Stokes eigenvalue problem. It is based on a postprocessing strategy that consists of solving an additional Stokes source problem on an augmented mixed finite element space which can be constructed either by refining the mesh or by using the same mesh but increasing the order of the mixed finite element space.

Nonconforming finite element approximations of the Steklov eigenvalue problem and its lower bound approximations

Qin LiQun LinHehu Xie — 2013

Applications of Mathematics

The paper deals with error estimates and lower bound approximations of the Steklov eigenvalue problems on convex or concave domains by nonconforming finite element methods. We consider four types of nonconforming finite elements: Crouzeix-Raviart, Q 1 rot , E Q 1 rot and enriched Crouzeix-Raviart. We first derive error estimates for the nonconforming finite element approximations of the Steklov eigenvalue problem and then give the analysis of lower bound approximations. Some numerical results are presented to...

Multilevel correction adaptive finite element method for semilinear elliptic equation

Qun LinHehu XieFei Xu — 2015

Applications of Mathematics

A type of adaptive finite element method is presented for semilinear elliptic problems based on multilevel correction scheme. The main idea of the method is to transform the semilinear elliptic equation into a sequence of linearized boundary value problems on the adaptive partitions and some semilinear elliptic problems on very low dimensional finite element spaces. Hence, solving the semilinear elliptic problem can reach almost the same efficiency as the adaptive method for the associated boundary...

Approximation and eigenvalue extrapolation of Stokes eigenvalue problem by nonconforming finite element methods

Shanghui JiaHehu XieXiaobo YinShaoqin Gao — 2009

Applications of Mathematics

In this paper we analyze the stream function-vorticity-pressure method for the Stokes eigenvalue problem. Further, we obtain full order convergence rate of the eigenvalue approximations for the Stokes eigenvalue problem based on asymptotic error expansions for two nonconforming finite elements, Q 1 rot and E Q 1 rot . Using the technique of eigenvalue error expansion, the technique of integral identities and the extrapolation method, we can improve the accuracy of the eigenvalue approximations.

A multilevel Newton's method for eigenvalue problems

Yunhui HeYu LiHehu XieChun'guang YouNing Zhang — 2018

Applications of Mathematics

We propose a new type of multilevel method for solving eigenvalue problems based on Newton's method. With the proposed iteration method, solving an eigenvalue problem on the finest finite element space is replaced by solving a small scale eigenvalue problem in a coarse space and a sequence of augmented linear problems, derived by Newton step in the corresponding sequence of finite element spaces. This iteration scheme improves overall efficiency of the finite element method for solving eigenvalue...
