A bifurcation theory for some nonlinear elliptic equations

Biagio Ricceri (2003)

Colloquium Mathematicae

We deal with the problem ⎧ -Δu = f(x,u) + λg(x,u), in Ω, ⎨ ( P λ ) ⎩ u Ω = 0 where Ω ⊂ ℝⁿ is a bounded domain, λ ∈ ℝ, and f,g: Ω×ℝ → ℝ are two Carathéodory functions with f(x,0) = g(x,0) = 0. Under suitable assumptions, we prove that there exists λ* > 0 such that, for each λ ∈ (0,λ*), problem ( P λ ) admits a non-zero, non-negative strong solution u λ p 2 W 2 , p ( Ω ) such that l i m λ 0 | | u λ | | W 2 , p ( Ω ) = 0 for all p ≥ 2. Moreover, the function λ I λ ( u λ ) is negative and decreasing in ]0,λ*[, where I λ is the energy functional related to ( P λ ).

A Reduced Model for Flame-Flow Interaction

P. Gordon, M. Frankel, G. Sivashinsky (2010)

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena

The paper is concerned with an extension of the classical relation between the flame speed and the curvature-flow stretch, valid only for high Lewis numbers (diffusively stable flames). At low Lewis numbers the corresponding flame-flow system suffers short-wavelength instability, making the associated initial value problem ill-posed. In this study the difficulty is resolved by incorporation of higher-order effects. As a result one ends up with a reduced model based on a coupled system of second-order...

Bifurcation theorems of Rabinowitz type for certain differential operators of the fourth order

Jolanta Przybycin (1992)

Annales Polonici Mathematici

This paper was inspired by the works of P. H. Rabinowitz. We study nonlinear eigenvalue problems for some fourth order elliptic partial differential equations with nonlinear perturbation of Rabinowitz type. We show the existence of an unbounded continuum of nontrivial positive solutions bifurcating from (μ₁,0), where μ₁ is the first eigenvalue of the linearization about 0 of the considered problem. We also prove the related theorem for bifurcation from infinity. The results obtained are similar...

Eigenvalues of polyharmonic operators on variable domains

Davide Buoso, Pier Domenico Lamberti (2013)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

We consider a class of eigenvalue problems for polyharmonic operators, including Dirichlet and buckling-type eigenvalue problems. We prove an analyticity result for the dependence of the symmetric functions of the eigenvalues upon domain perturbations and compute Hadamard-type formulas for the Frechét differentials. We also consider isovolumetric domain perturbations and characterize the corresponding critical domains for the symmetric functions of the eigenvalues. Finally, we prove that balls are...
