Determination of the unknown source term in a linear parabolic problem from the measured data at the final time

Müjdat Kaya (2014)

Applications of Mathematics

The problem of determining the source term F ( x , t ) in the linear parabolic equation u t = ( k ( x ) u x ( x , t ) ) x + F ( x , t ) from the measured data at the final time u ( x , T ) = μ ( x ) is formulated. It is proved that the Fréchet derivative of the cost functional J ( F ) = μ T ( x ) - u ( x , T ) 0 2 can be formulated via the solution of the adjoint parabolic problem. Lipschitz continuity of the gradient is proved. An existence result for a quasi solution of the considered inverse problem is proved. A monotone iteration scheme is obtained based on the gradient method. Convergence rate is proved....

Existence of solutions for nonlinear nonmonotone evolution equations in Banach spaces with anti-periodic boundary conditions

Sahbi Boussandel (2018)

Applications of Mathematics

The paper is devoted to the study of the existence of solutions for nonlinear nonmonotone evolution equations in Banach spaces involving anti-periodic boundary conditions. Our approach in this study relies on the theory of monotone and maximal monotone operators combined with the Schaefer fixed-point theorem and the monotonicity method. We apply our abstract results in order to solve a diffusion equation of Kirchhoff type involving the Dirichlet p -Laplace operator.

Gaussian estimates for fundamental solutions to certain parabolic systems.

Steve Hofmann, Seick Kim (2004)

Publicacions Matemàtiques

Auscher proved Gaussian upper bound estimates for the fundamental solutions to parabolic equations with complex coefficients in the case when coefficients are time-independent and a small perturbation of real coefficients. We prove the equivalence between the local boundedness property of solutions to a parabolic system and a Gaussian upper bound for its fundamental matrix. As a consequence, we extend Auscher's result to the time dependent case.

Global superconvergence of finite element methods for parabolic inverse problems

Hossein Azari, Shu Hua Zhang (2009)

Applications of Mathematics

In this article we transform a large class of parabolic inverse problems into a nonclassical parabolic equation whose coefficients consist of trace type functionals of the solution and its derivatives subject to some initial and boundary conditions. For this nonclassical problem, we study finite element methods and present an immediate analysis for global superconvergence for these problems, on basis of which we obtain a posteriori error estimators.

Harnack estimates for weak supersolutions to nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations

Tuomo Kuusi (2008)

Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa - Classe di Scienze

In this work we prove both local and global Harnack estimates for weak supersolutions to second order nonlinear degenerate parabolic partial differential equations in divergence form. We reduce the proof to an analysis of so-called hot and cold alternatives, and use the expansion of positivity together with a parabolic type of covering argument. Our proof uses only the properties of weak supersolutions. In particular, no comparison to weak solutions is needed.
