A priori error estimates for reduced order models in finance

Ekkehard W. Sachs, Matthias Schu (2013)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

Mathematical models for option pricing often result in partial differential equations. Recent enhancements are models driven by Lévy processes, which lead to a partial differential equation with an additional integral term. In the context of model calibration, these partial integro differential equations need to be solved quite frequently. To reduce the computational cost the implementation of a reduced order model has shown to be very successful numerically. In this paper we give a priori error...

A variational analysis of a gauged nonlinear Schrödinger equation

Alessio Pomponio, David Ruiz (2015)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

This paper is motivated by a gauged Schrödinger equation in dimension 2 including the so-called Chern-Simons term. The study of radial stationary states leads to the nonlocal problem: - Δ u ( x ) + ω + h 2 ( | x | ) | x | 2 + | x | + h ( s ) s u 2 ( s ) d s u ( x ) = | u ( x ) | p - 1 u ( x ) , where h ( r ) = 1 2 0 r s u 2 ( s ) d s . This problem is the Euler-Lagrange equation of a certain energy functional. In this paper the study of the global behavior of such functional is completed. We show that for p ( 1 , 3 ) , the functional may be bounded from below or not, depending on ω . Quite surprisingly, the threshold value for ω is explicit. From...

Backward solutions to nonlinear integro-differential systems

Yuzhen Bai (2010)

Open Mathematics

In this paper, we show the backward uniqueness in time of solutions to nonlinear integro-differential systems with Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions. We also discuss reasonable physical interpretations for our conclusions.

Bifurcations in a modulation equation for alternans in a cardiac fiber

Shu Dai, David G. Schaeffer (2010)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

While alternans in a single cardiac cell appears through a simple period-doubling bifurcation, in extended tissue the exact nature of the bifurcation is unclear. In particular, the phase of alternans can exhibit wave-like spatial dependence, either stationary or travelling, which is known as discordant alternans. We study these phenomena in simple cardiac models through a modulation equation proposed by Echebarria-Karma. As shown in our previous paper, the zero solution of their equation may lose...

Blow-up versus global existence of solutions to aggregation equations

Grzegorz Karch, Kanako Suzuki (2011)

Applicationes Mathematicae

A class of nonlinear viscous transport equations describing aggregation phenomena in biology is considered. General conditions on an interaction potential are obtained which lead either to the existence or to the nonexistence of global-in-time solutions.

Conservation property of symmetric jump processes

Jun Masamune, Toshihiro Uemura (2011)

Annales de l'I.H.P. Probabilités et statistiques

Motivated by the recent development in the theory of jump processes, we investigate its conservation property. We will show that a jump process is conservative under certain conditions for the volume-growth of the underlying space and the jump rate of the process. We will also present examples of jump processes which satisfy these conditions.

Control of the continuity equation with a non local flow

Rinaldo M. Colombo, Michael Herty, Magali Mercier (2011)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

This paper focuses on the analytical properties of the solutions to the continuity equation with non local flow. Our driving examples are a supply chain model and an equation for the description of pedestrian flows. To this aim, we prove the well posedness of weak entropy solutions in a class of equations comprising these models. Then, under further regularity conditions, we prove the differentiability of solutions with respect to the initial datum and characterize this derivative. A necessary ...

Evolution in a migrating population model

Włodzimierz Bąk, Tadeusz Nadzieja (2012)

Applicationes Mathematicae

We consider a model of migrating population occupying a compact domain Ω in the plane. We assume the Malthusian growth of the population at each point x ∈ Ω and that the mobility of individuals depends on x ∈ Ω. The evolution of the probability density u(x,t) that a randomly chosen individual occupies x ∈ Ω at time t is described by the nonlocal linear equation u t = Ω φ ( y ) u ( y , t ) d y - φ ( x ) u ( x , t ) , where φ(x) is a given function characterizing the mobility of individuals living at x. We show that the asymptotic behaviour of u(x,t)...

Existence of Waves for a Nonlocal Reaction-Diffusion Equation

I. Demin, V. Volpert (2010)

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena

In this work we study a nonlocal reaction-diffusion equation arising in population dynamics. The integral term in the nonlinearity describes nonlocal stimulation of reproduction. We prove existence of travelling wave solutions by the Leray-Schauder method using topological degree for Fredholm and proper operators and special a priori estimates of solutions in weighted Hölder spaces.

Fundamental solutions to the fractional heat conduction equation in a ball under Robin boundary condition

Yuriy Povstenko (2014)

Open Mathematics

The central symmetric time-fractional heat conduction equation with Caputo derivative of order 0 < α ≤ 2 is considered in a ball under two types of Robin boundary condition: the mathematical one with the prescribed linear combination of values of temperature and values of its normal derivative at the boundary, and the physical condition with the prescribed linear combination of values of temperature and values of the heat flux at the boundary, which is a consequence of Newton’s law of convective...

Hölder continuity of solutions of second-order non-linear elliptic integro-differential equations

Guy Barles, Emmanuel Chasseigne, Cyril Imbert (2011)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

This paper is concerned with the Hölder regularity of viscosity solutions of second-order, fully non-linear elliptic integro-differential equations. Our results rely on two key ingredients: first we assume that, at each point of the domain, either the equation is strictly elliptic in the classical fully non-linear sense, or (and this is the most original part of our work) the equation is strictly elliptic in a non-local non-linear sense we make precise. Next we impose some regularity and growth...
