An extremal problem in Banach algebras

Anders Olofsson (2001)

Studia Mathematica

We study asymptotics of a class of extremal problems rₙ(A,ε) related to norm controlled inversion in Banach algebras. In a general setting we prove estimates that can be considered as quantitative refinements of a theorem of Jan-Erik Björk [1]. In the last section we specialize further and consider a class of analytic Beurling algebras. In particular, a question raised by Jan-Erik Björk in [1] is answered in the negative.

An inverse Sidon type inequality

S. Fridli (1993)

Studia Mathematica

Sidon proved the inequality named after him in 1939. It is an upper estimate for the integral norm of a linear combination of trigonometric Dirichlet kernels expressed in terms of the coefficients. Since the estimate has many applications for instance in L 1 convergence problems and summation methods with respect to trigonometric series, newer and newer improvements of the original inequality has been proved by several authors. Most of them are invariant with respect to the rearrangement of the coefficients....

Bilinear operators associated with Schrödinger operators

Chin-Cheng Lin, Ying-Chieh Lin, Heping Liu, Yu Liu (2011)

Studia Mathematica

Let L = -Δ + V be a Schrödinger operator in d and H ¹ L ( d ) be the Hardy type space associated to L. We investigate the bilinear operators T⁺ and T¯ defined by T ± ( f , g ) ( x ) = ( T f ) ( x ) ( T g ) ( x ) ± ( T f ) ( x ) ( T g ) ( x ) , where T₁ and T₂ are Calderón-Zygmund operators related to L. Under some general conditions, we prove that either T⁺ or T¯ is bounded from L p ( d ) × L q ( d ) to H ¹ L ( d ) for 1 < p,q < ∞ with 1/p + 1/q = 1. Several examples satisfying these conditions are given. We also give a counterexample for which the classical Hardy space estimate fails.

Carleson's Theorem: proof, complements, variations.

Michael T. Lacey (2004)

Publicacions Matemàtiques

Carleson's Theorem from 1965 states that the partial Fourier sums of a square integrable function converge pointwise. We prove an equivalent statement on the real line, following the method developed by the author and C. Thiele. This theorem, and the proof presented, is at the center of an emerging theory which complements the statement and proof of Carleson's theorem. An outline of these variations is also given.

Convergence of greedy approximation I. General systems

S. V. Konyagin, V. N. Temlyakov (2003)

Studia Mathematica

We consider convergence of thresholding type approximations with regard to general complete minimal systems eₙ in a quasi-Banach space X. Thresholding approximations are defined as follows. Let eₙ* ⊂ X* be the conjugate (dual) system to eₙ; then define for ε > 0 and x ∈ X the thresholding approximations as T ε ( x ) : = j D ε ( x ) e * j ( x ) e j , where D ε ( x ) : = j : | e * j ( x ) | ε . We study a generalized version of T ε that we call the weak thresholding approximation. We modify the T ε ( x ) in the following way. For ε > 0, t ∈ (0,1) we set D t , ε ( x ) : = j : t ε | e * j ( x ) | < ε and consider the weak...

Convergence of series of dilated functions and spectral norms of GCD matrices

Christoph Aistleitner, István Berkes, Kristian Seip, Michel Weber (2015)

Acta Arithmetica

We establish a connection between the L² norm of sums of dilated functions whose jth Fourier coefficients are ( j - α ) for some α ∈ (1/2,1), and the spectral norms of certain greatest common divisor (GCD) matrices. Utilizing recent bounds for these spectral norms, we obtain sharp conditions for the convergence in L² and for the almost everywhere convergence of series of dilated functions.
