Classifications and characterizations of Baire-1 functions

Persephone Kiriakouli (1998)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Kechris and Louveau in [5] classified the bounded Baire-1 functions, which are defined on a compact metric space K , to the subclasses 1 ξ ( K ) , ξ < ω 1 . In [8], for every ordinal ξ < ω 1 we define a new type of convergence for sequences of real-valued functions ( ξ -uniformly pointwise) which is between uniform and pointwise convergence. In this paper using this type of convergence we obtain a classification of pointwise convergent sequences of continuous real-valued functions defined on a compact metric space K , and...

Completely regular spaces

H. L. Bentley, Eva Lowen-Colebunders (1991)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

We conduct an investigation of the relationships which exist between various generalizations of complete regularity in the setting of merotopic spaces, with particular attention to filter spaces such as Cauchy spaces and convergence spaces. Our primary contribution consists in the presentation of several counterexamples establishing the divergence of various such generalizations of complete regularity. We give examples of: (1) a contigual zero space which is not weakly regular and is not a Cauchy...

Completeness properties of function rings in pointfree topology

Bernhard Banaschewski, Sung Sa Hong (2003)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

This note establishes that the familiar internal characterizations of the Tychonoff spaces whose rings of continuous real-valued functions are complete, or σ -complete, as lattice ordered rings already hold in the larger setting of pointfree topology. In addition, we prove the corresponding results for rings of integer-valued functions.

Connected economically metrizable spaces

Taras Banakh, Myroslava Vovk, Michał Ryszard Wójcik (2011)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

A topological space is non-separably connected if it is connected but all of its connected separable subspaces are singletons. We show that each connected sequential topological space X is the image of a non-separably connected complete metric space X under a monotone quotient map. The metric d X of the space X is economical in the sense that for each infinite subspace A ⊂ X the cardinality of the set d X ( a , b ) : a , b A does not exceed the density of A, | d X ( A × A ) | d e n s ( A ) . The construction of the space X determines a functor : Top...

Dedekind cuts in C(X)

Nicolae Dăneţ (2011)

Banach Center Publications

The aim of this paper is to show that every Hausdorff continuous interval-valued function on a completely regular topological space X corresponds to a Dedekind cut in C(X) and conversely.

Dimension in algebraic frames, II: Applications to frames of ideals in C ( X )

Jorge Martinez, Eric R. Zenk (2005)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

This paper continues the investigation into Krull-style dimensions in algebraic frames. Let L be an algebraic frame. dim ( L ) is the supremum of the lengths k of sequences p 0 < p 1 < < p k of (proper) prime elements of L . Recently, Th. Coquand, H. Lombardi and M.-F. Roy have formulated a characterization which describes the dimension of L in terms of the dimensions of certain boundary quotients of L . This paper gives a purely frame-theoretic proof of this result, at once generalizing it to frames which are not necessarily...

Extension of functions with small oscillation

Denny H. Leung, Wee-Kee Tang (2006)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

A classical theorem of Kuratowski says that every Baire one function on a G δ subspace of a Polish (= separable completely metrizable) space X can be extended to a Baire one function on X. Kechris and Louveau introduced a finer gradation of Baire one functions into small Baire classes. A Baire one function f is assigned into a class in this hierarchy depending on its oscillation index β(f). We prove a refinement of Kuratowski’s theorem: if Y is a subspace of a metric space X and f is a real-valued...
