A faithful linear-categorical action of the mapping class group of a surface with boundary

Robert Lipshitz, Peter Ozsváth, Dylan P. Thurston (2013)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

We show that the action of the mapping class group on bordered Floer homology in the second to extremal spin c -structure is faithful. This paper is designed partly as an introduction to the subject, and much of it should be readable without a background in Floer homology.

A Note on the Rational Cuspidal Curves

Piotr Nayar, Barbara Pilat (2014)

Bulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Mathematics

In this short note we give an elementary combinatorial argument, showing that the conjecture of J. Fernández de Bobadilla, I. Luengo-Velasco, A. Melle-Hernández and A. Némethi [Proc. London Math. Soc. 92 (2006), 99-138, Conjecture 1] follows from Theorem 5.4 of Brodzik and Livingston [arXiv:1304.1062] in the case of rational cuspidal curves with two critical points.

An index inequality for embedded pseudoholomorphic curves in symplectizations

Michael Hutchings (2002)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Let Σ be a surface with a symplectic form, let φ be a symplectomorphism of Σ , and let Y be the mapping torus of φ . We show that the dimensions of moduli spaces of embedded pseudoholomorphic curves in × 𝕐 , with cylindrical ends asymptotic to periodic orbits of φ or multiple covers thereof, are bounded from above by an additive relative index. We deduce some compactness results for these moduli spaces. This paper establishes some of the foundations for a program with Michael Thaddeus, to understand...

Introduction to the basics of Heegaard Floer homology

Bijan Sahamie (2013)

Annales de la faculté des sciences de Toulouse Mathématiques

This paper provides an introduction to the basics of Heegaard Floer homology with some emphasis on the hat theory and to the contact geometric invariants in the theory. The exposition is designed to be comprehensible to people without any prior knowledge of the subject.

Linking and the Morse complex

Michael Usher (2014)

Annales de la faculté des sciences de Toulouse Mathématiques

For a Morse function f on a compact oriented manifold M , we show that f has more critical points than the number required by the Morse inequalities if and only if there exists a certain class of link in M whose components have nontrivial linking number, such that the minimal value of f on one of the components is larger than its maximal value on the other. Indeed we characterize the precise number of critical points of f in terms of the Betti numbers of M and the behavior of f with respect to links....
