A model of macroscale deformation and microvibration in skeletal muscle tissue

Bernd Simeon, Radu Serban, Linda R. Petzold (2009)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

This paper deals with modeling the passive behavior of skeletal muscle tissue including certain microvibrations at the cell level. Our approach combines a continuum mechanics model with large deformation and incompressibility at the macroscale with chains of coupled nonlinear oscillators. The model verifies that an externally applied vibration at the appropriate frequency is able to synchronize microvibrations in skeletal muscle cells. From the numerical analysis point of view, one faces...

Analysis of a prototypical multiscale method coupling atomistic and continuum mechanics

Xavier Blanc, Claude Le Bris, Frédéric Legoll (2005)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

In order to describe a solid which deforms smoothly in some region, but non smoothly in some other region, many multiscale methods have recently been proposed. They aim at coupling an atomistic model (discrete mechanics) with a macroscopic model (continuum mechanics). We provide here a theoretical ground for such a coupling in a one-dimensional setting. We briefly study the general case of a convex energy, and next concentrate on a specific example of a nonconvex energy, the Lennard-Jones case....

Extended continuum mechanics for the study of granular flows

Gianfranco Capriz, George Mullenger (1995)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni

We exploit a recent proposal of an «extended kinematics» to describe fast flows of granular materials. Prompted by some remarks in elementary point dynamics, we suggest balance laws which might be of use in studying the evolution of those flows.

Ground states in complex bodies

Paolo Maria Mariano, Giuseppe Modica (2009)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

A unified framework for analyzing the existence of ground states in wide classes of elastic complex bodies is presented here. The approach makes use of classical semicontinuity results, Sobolev mappings and cartesian currents. Weak diffeomorphisms are used to represent macroscopic deformations. Sobolev maps and cartesian currents describe the inner substructure of the material elements. Balance equations for irregular minimizers are derived. A contribution to the debate about the role of the balance...

Linear approximation in Continuum Mechanics

Giuseppe Grioli (1994)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni

Some critical remarks are made about the theory of Linear Elasticity, questioning on its validity in general. An alternative linear approximation of the exact theory is proposed.

Material constraints in continuum mechanics

Stuart S. Antman (1981)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni
