Controllability of three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations and applications

Armen Shirikyan (2005/2006)

Séminaire Équations aux dérivées partielles

We formulate two results on controllability properties of the 3D Navier–Stokes (NS) system. They concern the approximate controllability and exact controllability in finite-dimensional projections of the problem in question. As a consequence, we obtain the existence of a strong solution of the Cauchy problem for the 3D NS system with an arbitrary initial function and a large class of right-hand sides. We also discuss some qualitative properties of admissible weak solutions for randomly forced NS...

Dynamic Programming for the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations

Giuseppe da Prato, Arnaud Debussche (2010)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

We solve an optimal cost problem for a stochastic Navier-Stokes equation in space dimension 2 by proving existence and uniqueness of a smooth solution of the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation.

Local Solutions for Stochastic Navier Stokes Equations

Alain Bensoussan, Jens Frehse (2010)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

In this article we consider local solutions for stochastic Navier Stokes equations, based on the approach of Von Wahl, for the deterministic case. We present several approaches of the concept, depending on the smoothness available. When smoothness is available, we can in someway reduce the stochastic equation to a deterministic one with a random parameter. In the general case, we mimic the concept of local solution for stochastic differential equations.

Probabilistic analysis of singularities for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations

Franco Flandoli, Marco Romito (2002)

Mathematica Bohemica

The classical result on singularities for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations says that the 1 -dimensional Hausdorff measure of the set of singular points is zero. For a stochastic version of the equation, new results are proved. For statistically stationary solutions, at any given time t , with probability one the set of singular points is empty. The same result is true for a.e. initial condition with respect to a measure related to the stationary solution, and if the noise is sufficiently non degenerate...

Propagation of chaos for the 2D viscous vortex model

Nicolas Fournier, Maxime Hauray, Stéphane Mischler (2014)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

We consider a stochastic system of N particles, usually called vortices in that setting, approximating the 2D Navier-Stokes equation written in vorticity. Assuming that the initial distribution of the position and circulation of the vortices has finite (partial) entropy and a finite moment of positive order, we show that the empirical measure of the particle system converges in law to the unique (under suitable a priori estimates) solution of the 2D Navier-Stokes equation. We actually prove a slightly...

Properties of time-dependent statistical solutions of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations

Ciprian Foias, Ricardo M. S. Rosa, Roger Temam (2013)

Annales de l’institut Fourier

This work is devoted to the concept of statistical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations, proposed as a rigorous mathematical object to address the fundamental concept of ensemble average used in the study of the conventional theory of fully developed turbulence. Two types of statistical solutions have been proposed in the 1970’s, one by Foias and Prodi and the other one by Vishik and Fursikov. In this article, a new, intermediate type of statistical solution is introduced and studied. This solution...

Some results on invariant measures in hydrodynamics

B. Ferrario (2000)

Bollettino dell'Unione Matematica Italiana

Some results on the Navier-Stokes equations in connection with the statistical theory of stationary turbulence

Ricardo M. S. Rosa (2002)

Applications of Mathematics

Some rigorous results connected with the conventional statistical theory of turbulence in both the two- and three-dimensional cases are discussed. Such results are based on the concept of stationary statistical solution, related to the notion of ensemble average for turbulence in statistical equilibrium, and concern, in particular, the mean kinetic energy and enstrophy fluxes and their corresponding cascades. Some of the results are developed here in the case of nonsmooth boundaries and a less regular...

Uncertainty quantification for data assimilation in a steady incompressible Navier-Stokes problem

Marta D’Elia, Alessandro Veneziani (2013)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

The reliable and effective assimilation of measurements and numerical simulations in engineering applications involving computational fluid dynamics is an emerging problem as soon as new devices provide more data. In this paper we are mainly driven by hemodynamics applications, a field where the progressive increment of measures and numerical tools makes this problem particularly up-to-date. We adopt a Bayesian approach to the inclusion of noisy data in the incompressible steady Navier-Stokes equations...
