A compactness result in thin-film micromagnetics and the optimality of the Néel wall

Radu Ignat, Felix Otto (2008)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

In this paper, we study a model for the magnetization in thin ferromagnetic films. It comes as a variational problem for S 1 -valued maps m ' (the magnetization) of two variables x ' : E ε ( m ' ) = ε | ' · m ' | 2 d x ' + 1 2 | ' | - 1 / 2 ' · m ' 2 d x ' . We are interested in the behavior of minimizers as ε 0 . They are expected to be S 1 -valued maps m ' of vanishing distributional divergence ' · m ' = 0 , so that appropriate boundary conditions enforce line discontinuities. For finite ε > 0 , these line discontinuities are approximated by smooth transition layers, the so-called Néel walls. Néel...

Convergence and stability of a discontinuous Galerkin time-domain method for the 3D heterogeneous Maxwell equations on unstructured meshes

Loula Fezoui, Stéphane Lanteri, Stéphanie Lohrengel, Serge Piperno (2005)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

A Discontinuous Galerkin method is used for to the numerical solution of the time-domain Maxwell equations on unstructured meshes. The method relies on the choice of local basis functions, a centered mean approximation for the surface integrals and a second-order leap-frog scheme for advancing in time. The method is proved to be stable for cases with either metallic or absorbing boundary conditions, for a large class of basis functions. A discrete analog of the electromagnetic energy is conserved...

High order transmission conditions for thin conductive sheets in magneto-quasistatics

Kersten Schmidt, Sébastien Tordeux (2011)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

We propose transmission conditions of order 1, 2 and 3 approximating the shielding behaviour of thin conducting curved sheets for the magneto-quasistatic eddy current model in 2D. This model reduction applies to sheets whose thicknesses ε are at the order of the skin depth or essentially smaller. The sheet has itself not to be resolved, only its midline is represented by an interface. The computation is directly in one step with almost no additional cost. We prove the well-posedness w.r.t. to...

Properties of a quasi-uniformly monotone operator and its application to the electromagnetic $p$-$\text {curl}$ systems

Chang-Ho Song, Yong-Gon Ri, Cholmin Sin (2022)

Applications of Mathematics

In this paper we propose a new concept of quasi-uniform monotonicity weaker than the uniform monotonicity which has been developed in the study of nonlinear operator equation $Au=b$. We prove that if $A$ is a quasi-uniformly monotone and hemi-continuous operator, then $A^{-1}$ is strictly monotone, bounded and continuous, and thus the Galerkin approximations converge. Also we show an application of a quasi-uniformly monotone and hemi-continuous operator to the proof of the well-posedness and convergence...

Solutions with vortices of a semi-stiff boundary value problem for the Ginzburg–Landau equation

Leonid Berlyand, Volodymyr Rybalko (2010)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

We study solutions of the 2D Ginzburg–Landau equation - Δ u + ε - 2 u ( | u | 2 - 1 ) = 0 subject to “semi-stiff” boundary conditions: Dirichlet conditions for the modulus, | u | = 1 , and homogeneous Neumann conditions for the phase. The principal result of this work shows that there are stable solutions of this problem with zeros (vortices), which are located near the boundary and have bounded energy in the limit of small ε . For the Dirichlet boundary condition (“stiff” problem), the existence of stable solutions with vortices, whose energy...
