Variational approximation for detecting point-like target problems

Gilles Aubert, Daniele Graziani (2011)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

The aim of this paper is to provide a rigorous variational formulation for the detection of points in -d biological images. To this purpose we introduce a new functional whose minimizers give the points we want to detect. Then we define an approximating sequence of functionals for which we prove the -convergence to the initial one.

Dimension reduction for −Δ1

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

A 3D-2D dimension reduction for −Δ is obtained. A power law approximation from −Δ as  → 1 in terms of -convergence, duality and asymptotics for least gradient functions has also been provided.

Image segmentation with a finite element method

Blaise Bourdin (2010)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

The Mumford-Shah functional for image segmentation is an original approach of the image segmentation problem, based on a minimal energy criterion. Its minimization can be seen as a free discontinuity problem and is based on -convergence and bounded variation functions theories. Some new regularization results, make possible to imagine a finite element resolution method. In a first time, the Mumford-Shah functional is introduced and some existing results are quoted. Then, a discrete...

Spatial heterogeneity in 3D-2D dimensional reduction

Jean-François Babadjian, Gilles A. Francfort (2010)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

A justification of heterogeneous membrane models as zero-thickness limits of a cylindral three-dimensional heterogeneous nonlinear hyperelastic body is proposed in the spirit of Le Dret (1995). Specific characterizations of the 2D elastic energy are produced. As a generalization of Bouchitté (2002), the case where external loads induce a density of bending moment that produces a Cosserat vector field is also investigated. Throughout, the 3D-2D dimensional reduction is viewed as a problem...
