The paper investigates the nonlinear function spaces introduced by Giaquinta, Modica and Souček. It is shown that a function from is approximated by functions strongly in whenever . An example is shown of a function which is in but not in .
We prove the --time decay estimates for the solution of the Cauchy problem for the hyperbolic system of partial differential equations of linear thermoelasticity. In our proof based on the matrix of fundamental solutions to the system we use Strauss-Klainerman’s approach [12], [5] to the --time decay estimates.
Theoretical and experimental results concerning the shear-center of a bent beam with variable section are carried out. The matrix methods of structural analysis for the static linear elastic problem is extended; the stiffness and load matrix are formulated starting from the sectorial areas theory in order to interpret the effect of non-uniform torsion. The formulation may be used through the general matrix displacement method of structural analysis.
Large time behavior of the solution to the nonlinear integro-differential equation associated with the penetration of a magnetic field into a substance is studied. Furthermore, the rate of convergence is given. Initial-boundary value problem with mixed boundary conditions is considered.
This expository paper is meant to be a faithful account the invited lecture I gave in Naples on September 14, 1999, during the 16th Congress of U.M.I., the Italian Mathematical Union. In Section 2, I consider the Gilbert equation, the parabolic equation that rules the evolution of the magnetization vector in a rigid ferromagnet. Among the issues I here discuss are the relations of the Gilbert equation to the harmonic map equation and its heat flow, the existence of global-in-time weak solutions,...
The paper deals with numerical realization of contact problems with friction obeying the Coulomb law. The original problem is formulated as the fixed-point problem for a certain operator generated by the variational inequality. This inequality is transformed to a system of variational nonlinear equations generating other operators, in a sense "close" to the above one. The fixed-point problem of these operators is solved by the least-square method in which equations and the corresponding quadratic...
The limiting behavior of global attractors for singularly perturbed beam equations
is investigated. It is shown that for any neighborhood of the set is included in for small.
