Abstract

The aim of this paper is to sketch out a conception of how a pragmatist theory can account for the determination of the conceptual content of our beliefs. The first part explains the motivation for a pragmatist theory of conceptual content — namely, to overcome the problem of rule-following. The second part introduces the idea of an inferential semantics. The third part offers a reconstruction of how social practices determine conceptual content and discusses the kind of theory of content and truth to which this conception leads.
