Abstract

In a note that appeared in volume 4 (1998) of the Revue d’histoire des mathématiques, Bruno Belhoste discussed the role of teaching in the development of mathematics and the degree of importance accorded to this dimension in research on the history of mathematics. The present note further elaborates Belhoste’s methodological point by generalizing, in particular, the notion of teaching as an element of communication inherent to all processes of production.
