Abstract

The situation of industrial mathematics in Italy is discussed along with general perspectives in the field. A glance at the past reveals surprisingly interesting. After some considerations about the relationship between generic applied mathematics and mathematics for industry, the role of the industrial mathematician is described in the form of an interview. As a pratical example, a large scale cooperation project with an oil industrial company is illustrated.
