Abstract

In the past two years I talked to a great many people. One of the fundamental questions concerning the further development of applied mathematics in Poland is whether to appoint a new discipline (s) in the field of mathematics or not. Such a possible new discipline could be, for example. Applied statistics and mathematics calculation. Opinions are divided. The basic argument is this: ”If you summon a new discipline, it will give an impulse to the development of this kind of research in Poland. It does not bother us that maybe in the beginning only one or two departments will get permissions.” I agree with this argument except that it must appear a group of people - professionals such or other uses that his authority will ensure the quality, as well as prepare an appropriate proposal. They must be the people who really know their subject. This is the main conclusion of the discussion that took place at the Council of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Wrocław on 18 March 2014 bf I believe the same potential vote ”for” on the Committee on Mathematics is not enough - without any previous preparation exactly nothing will change. The movement is now on the wworld ofapplied mathematicians because all the others are generally very positive attitude.
