Abstract

The first cells of the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus appear in the embryonal period (stage 38) of an Urodelan Amphibian (Triturus cristatus carnifex). The number of these neurons increases during the larval period but also after metamorphosis, reaching nearly 150 cells in the adults. The growth of these neurons (cellular body and nucleus) is described. The mesencephalic trigeminal neurons are scattered in the dorsal half of the mesencephalon; in the embryonal stages most of them are located in the superficial griseum of the walls; in the first larval stages most of them line the ventricular epithelium and in the last larval stages are mostly found near to the medial line of the mesencephalic roof.
