The chemical and structural characteristics of plant cuticles are, according to the most recent literature, constant for a given plant species. However one may presume that cuticular characteristics should depend, at least in part, on environmental conditions. Cuticules were obtained from the upper surfaces of leaves of uniclonal plants of Hedera helix L., grown under field conditions with complete or 50% reduced light intensities: The histophotometric analysis of the cuticules, electively stained, showed that at least some of their components, the cellulosic and pectic materials, were present in quite different amounts in the leaves in sun and in shadow. This suggests that light intensities may play an important role on the synthesis of cuticule components.
