Abstract

top
The article is a continuation from the previous issue. It focuses on activities which aim at building new mathematical knowledge via manipulation and experimenting. One activity is a Logo construction set which can be used for developing spatial imagery. The main part of the article aims at geometric constructions with constructing tools - it consists of stories which motivate pupils to construct shapes using the knowledge of some of their properties. It is shown that the stage of constructing the shape is indispensable and that the constructing itself is a part of the discovery process. It is documented that in the teaching process, the phase of experimenting and making hypotheses is underestimated and unnecessarily accelerated. The third part of the article concerns university students. It is shown how land surveying can be used for motivating them for mathematics and developing their geometric knowledge. The authors support the constructivist approaches to the teaching of mathematics.
