Abstract

We define a functional calculus, for harmonic vector valued functions, in Banach algebras with continuous involution. Using this calculus, we obtain in two settings an extension of theorems of von Neumann and Ky Fan on contractions to analytic vector valued functions in Hermitian Banach algebras. We also get an extension of Schwarz’s lemma and Pick’s theorem.
