Tomasz Franciszek Schreiber, a young Polish mathematician, passed away on December 1, 2010. Since 2009 he was a professor at the Department of Probability Theory and Stochastic Analysis at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Nicolaus Copernicus University (NCU) in Toruń.

The article discusses pictures of Mathematical Science which seem to exist in the Polish society, in society of Polish scientists and inside of the society of Polish mathematicians. It is emphasized that applications of mathematics (including stochastics) do not receive enough attention and support. Some steps towards change of this situation are proposed.
