Orthoboric HBO thin films are prepared by a new tecnique consisting in vaporizing and condensing the orthoboric acid directly on the windows of an i.r. cell under vacuum. The i.r. spectra of the thin films are reported and their iso-oriented nature is indicated by the lack of the absorption i.r. bands due to O-H and BO out-of-plane vibrations. Some considerations on thin film structure are then stated.
A thin polycristalline film of -glycine, which had been previously ground and exposed to air-humidity for some days, shows strong changes in the i.r. spectrum if it is compressed between two KBr discs. By the analogy between this i.r. spectrum and that of -glycine, it has been supposed a crystalline transformation of -glycine towards the form which is caused by a pressure effect and by a surface effect of KBr discs. An explanation of the phenomenon is to refer to the different types of hydrogen...
The i.r. spectra of KBr disks are recorded on potassium bromide fused into and outside the contact of a methane-air flame. In the first case more absorption i.r. bands have been observed and they have been attributed to CO, CO
and HCO
(unstable) adsorbed species. A mechanism of CO
ions formation is proposed and it contemplates a reaction between CO of the flame and OH ions formed onto surface of the material fused into the contact of the flame. Some...
