The benthic fauna of the east coast of the Gulf of Taranto includes 60 species (out of 170) which have not been found on the west coast. Half of these species live on the bathyal muds between 200 and 1200 m depth; four Polychaetes are new for the Mediterranean. A poor bathyal Foraminifera-community inhabiting the deeper muddy bottoms of the Gulf of Taranto (Ionian Sea) is described. Characterizing species are: Cyclammina cancellata Br., Pyrgo bulloides (d'Orb.), Spiofihanes kroyeri Gr. var. reyssi Laub., Amphicteis gunnerì (Sars) Ninoe kinbergi Ehl., Tharyx marioni (St. Jos.), Melinna palmata Gr., Nucula nucleus (L.), Abra alba (Wood.), Entalina tetragona (Br.), Goneplax rhomboïdes (L.), Thenea muricata (Bow.). The standing crop is only 1.1 g per sq.m.

The benthic fauna of the western coast of the Gulf of Taranto, explored during six cruises (305 Stations) made with the R. V. "Albatros", includes 160 species, 38 of which are known. Turritella communis, Owenia fusiformis, Echinocardium cordatum and Cyclammina cancellata of the depth bottoms are sometimes biocenosis-forming species.
