In young embryos of Bufo bufo toad some germ cells are localized in the most dorso-caudal part of the endodermic mass. The ablation of this part produces a reduction of the number of germ cells migrating in the genital ridges, and a reduction of the length of genital bodies and mesonephros. By multiplication of residual germ cells, genital ridges subsequently differentiate, as in normal specimens, a Bidder organ in their cephalic tract and a reduced gonad in their caudal tract.
Bufo bufo embryos were subjected to 800r X-ray panirradiation at the III stage and killed for the histological examination stage by stage in the following days. In their genital bodies the number of germ-cells persists almost unchanged during the first 16 days. Then, at the larval stages in which, in normal developmental conditions, should have begun the mitotic multiplication of germ-cells, their number suddenly decreases to complete sterility.
In the Polychaete Serpulid Mercierella enigmatica Fauvel have been studied the vasal morphology and the connections between the intermetameric blood vessels and the germ-cells or other mesoblastic cells.
