In the often wide interval between the creation of the cracks along the yield lines and the plastic collapse it is possible to concentrate the flexibility of the plates along the plastic hinges, which gives a linear relationship between load and deflection. This hypothesis is discussed taking into account the deformation of the panels and the compatibility of the overall behaviour of the plate.
A schematization of the behaviour of flat slabs in an advanced cracking stage which the Authors recently put forward allows to outline the load-deflection diagram as three straight segments corresponding to elastic, rigid-elastic, and rigid plastic behaviour. On the basis of this representation, which has been well confirmed by experimental results, it seems possible to control service behaviour of slabs designed at ultimate limit state.
Discussion of two methods for the linearization of the checking of safety in structures with non linear behaviour in presence of a single action.
