Existence of solutions to nonlinear advection-diffusion equation applied to Burgers' equation using Sinc methods

Kamel Al-Khaled (2014)

Applications of Mathematics

Similarity:

This paper has two objectives. First, we prove the existence of solutions to the general advection-diffusion equation subject to a reasonably smooth initial condition. We investigate the behavior of the solution of these problems for large values of time. Secondly, a numerical scheme using the Sinc-Galerkin method is developed to approximate the solution of a simple model of turbulence, which is a special case of the advection-diffusion equation, known as Burgers' equation. The approximate...

A two-scale approach to logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and the hydrodynamic limit

Natalie Grunewald, Felix Otto, Cédric Villani, Maria G. Westdickenberg (2009)

Annales de l'I.H.P. Probabilités et statistiques

Similarity:

We consider the coarse-graining of a lattice system with continuous spin variable. In the first part, two abstract results are established: sufficient conditions for a logarithmic Sobolev inequality with constants independent of the dimension (Theorem 3) and sufficient conditions for convergence to the hydrodynamic limit (Theorem 8). In the second part, we use the abstract results to treat a specific example, namely the Kawasaki dynamics with Ginzburg–Landau-type potential.

Approximation of the marginal distributions of a semi-Markov process using a finite volume scheme

Christiane Cocozza-Thivent, Robert Eymard (2004)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

Similarity:

In the reliability theory, the availability of a component, characterized by non constant failure and repair rates, is obtained, at a given time, thanks to the computation of the marginal distributions of a semi-Markov process. These measures are shown to satisfy classical transport equations, the approximation of which can be done thanks to a finite volume method. Within a uniqueness result for the continuous solution, the convergence of the numerical scheme is then proven in the weak...

Non-local approximation of free-discontinuity problems with linear growth

Luca Lussardi, Enrico Vitali (2007)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

Similarity:

We approximate, in the sense of -convergence, free-discontinuity functionals with linear growth in the gradient by a sequence of non-local integral functionals depending on the average of the gradients on small balls. The result extends to higher dimension what we already proved in the one-dimensional case.
