Functions of bounded variation on compact subsets of the plane

Brenden Ashton, Ian Doust (2005)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

A major obstacle in extending the theory of well-bounded operators to cover operators whose spectrum is not necessarily real has been the lack of a suitable variation norm applicable to functions defined on an arbitrary nonempty compact subset σ of the plane. In this paper we define a new Banach algebra BV(σ) of functions of bounded variation on such a set and show that the function-theoretic properties of this algebra make it better suited to applications in spectral theory than those...

Disjoint hypercyclic operators

Luis Bernal-González (2007)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

We introduce the concept of disjoint hypercyclic operators. These are operators performing the approximation of any given vectors with a common subsequence of iterates applied on a common vector. The notion is extended to sequences of operators, and applied to composition operators and differential operators on spaces of analytic functions.

Unconditionally p-null sequences and unconditionally p-compact operators

Ju Myung Kim (2014)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

We investigate sequences and operators via the unconditionally p-summable sequences. We characterize the unconditionally p-null sequences in terms of a certain tensor product and then prove that, for every 1 ≤ p < ∞, a subset of a Banach space is relatively unconditionally p-compact if and only if it is contained in the closed convex hull of an unconditionally p-null sequence.

A class of tridiagonal operators associated to some subshifts

Christian Hernández-Becerra, Benjamín A. Itzá-Ortiz (2016)

Open Mathematics

Similarity:

We consider a class of tridiagonal operators induced by not necessary pseudoergodic biinfinite sequences. Using only elementary techniques we prove that the numerical range of such operators is contained in the convex hull of the union of the numerical ranges of the operators corresponding to the constant biinfinite sequences; whilst the other inclusion is shown to hold when the constant sequences belong to the subshift generated by the given biinfinite sequence. Applying recent results...

Polaroid type operators and compact perturbations

Chun Guang Li, Ting Ting Zhou (2014)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

A bounded linear operator T acting on a Hilbert space is said to be polaroid if each isolated point in the spectrum is a pole of the resolvent of T. There are several generalizations of the polaroid property. We investigate compact perturbations of polaroid type operators. We prove that, given an operator T and ε > 0, there exists a compact operator K with ||K|| < ε such that T + K is polaroid. Moreover, we characterize those operators for which a certain polaroid type property...

Notes on q-deformed operators

Schôichi Ôta, Franciszek Hugon Szafraniec (2004)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

The paper concerns operators of deformed structure like q-normal and q-hyponormal operators with the deformation parameter q being a positive number different from 1. In particular, an example of a q-hyponormal operator with empty spectrum is given, and q-hyponormality is characterized in terms of some operator inequalities.

Algebra of Polynomially Bounded Sequences and Negligible Functions

Hiroyuki Okazaki (2015)

Formalized Mathematics

Similarity:

In this article we formalize negligible functions that play an essential role in cryptology [10], [2]. Generally, a cryptosystem is secure if the probability of succeeding any attacks against the cryptosystem is negligible. First, we formalize the algebra of polynomially bounded sequences [20]. Next, we formalize negligible functions and prove the set of negligible functions is a subset of the algebra of polynomially bounded sequences. Moreover, we then introduce equivalence relation...

Universality of derivative and antiderivative operators with holomorphic coefficients

María del Carmen Calderón-Moreno (2001)

Annales Polonici Mathematici

Similarity:

We prove some conditions on a sequence of functions and on a complex domain for the existence of universal functions with respect to sequences of certain derivative and antiderivative operators related to them. Conditions for the equicontinuity of those families of operators are also studied. The conditions depend upon the "size" of the domain and functions. Some earlier results about multiplicative complex sequences are extended.

Ascent and descent for sets of operators

Derek Kitson (2009)

Studia Mathematica

Similarity:

We extend the notion of ascent and descent for an operator acting on a vector space to sets of operators. If the ascent and descent of a set are both finite then they must be equal and give rise to a canonical decomposition of the space. Algebras of operators, unions of sets and closures of sets are treated. As an application we construct a Browder joint spectrum for commuting tuples of bounded operators which is compact-valued and has the projection property.
