In this paper we introduce numerical schemes for a one-dimensional kinetic model of the Boltzmann equation with dissipative collisions and variable coefficient of restitution. In particular, we study the numerical passage of the Boltzmann equation with singular kernel to nonlinear friction equations in the so-called quasi elastic limit. To this aim we introduce a Fourier spectral method for the Boltzmann equation [CITE] and show that the kernel modes that define the spectral method have...

We give an elementary proof of the fact that given two polynomials P, Q without common zeros and a linear operator A, the operators P(A) and Q(A) verify some properties equivalent to the pair (P(A),Q(A)) being non-singular in the sense of J.L. Taylor. From these properties we derive expressions for the range and null space of P(A) and spectral mapping theorems for polynomials fo continuous (or closed) operators in Banach spaces.

We study a class of operator polynomials in Hilbert space which are spectraloid in the sense that spectral radius and numerical radius coincide. The focus is on the spectrum in the boundary of the numerical range. As an application, the Eneström-Kakeya-Hurwitz theorem on zeros of real polynomials is generalized to Hilbert space.

The problem of a solving a class of hypersingular integral equations over the boundary of a nonplanar disc is considered. The solution is obtained by an expansion in basis functions that are orthogonal over the unit disc. A Fourier series in the azimuthal angle, with the Fourier coefficients expanded in terms of Gegenbauer polynomials is employed. These integral equations appear in the study of the interaction of water waves with submerged thin plates.
