Nowadays, many users discover TeX through high-level formats that hide the complexity of typesetting behind a facade of a friendly markup language. However, all except the simplest of typesetting tasks require that the user can understand what happens under the hood and knows how they can influence the algorithms of TeX when needed. In this article, the author introduces the foundations of most high-level TeX formats, which will help the readers with their day-to-day work with TeX...

pTeX is a TeX-like typesetting system that is specifically designed for typesetting Japanese and is widely used in Japan. This article describes how to acquire, set up and use a pTeX system in practice, with an emphasis on font management. It also provides basic background information on Japanese text processing and alternatives to pTeX.

This paper deals with wildfire identification in the Alaska regions as a semantic segmentation task using support vector machine classifiers. Instead of colour information represented by means of BGR channels, we proceed with a normalized reflectance over 152 days so that such time series is assigned to each pixel. We compare models associated with -loss and -loss functions and stopping criteria based on a projected gradient and duality gap in the presented benchmarks.

In this paper, we present a summary of our work on the TeX Gyre fonts. We also discuss inconsistencies in the existing fonts and encodings and show how the problems are solved in the TeX Gyre fonts.

This article describes new features in TeXonWeb. TeXonWeb is a web application that allows us to use TeX/LaTeX typesetting system without needing its installation on a local computer. One of the most important characteristics of this application is to help beginners to start working with TeX/LaTeX. It offers them a lot of tools such as table and list wizards to ease their first steps.

Blahtex and Blahtexml are open-source tools for converting mathematical expressions written in the TeX syntax into MathML. This article focuses on a particular use case, where the source of a scientific document is written in XML and can be the input for a variety of output formats, ranging from LaTeX articles to documents in OpenDocument format to web pages. We show that Blahtexml can play a central role in such a context, where the author wishes to enter equations in the TeX syntax...

An ray pattern is called a spectrally arbitrary ray pattern if the complex matrices in give rise to all possible complex polynomials of degree . In a paper of Mei, Gao, Shao, and Wang (2014) was proved that the minimum number of nonzeros in an irreducible spectrally arbitrary ray pattern is . In this paper, we introduce a new family of spectrally arbitrary ray patterns of order with exactly nonzeros.
