abstract = {Wladyslaw Kretkowski coat Dołęga was born on 21st of December 1840, in Wierzbnik, in his mother’s family estate, in the Kujawy region, the Polish Kingdom . His parents were Emilian and Isabella Chrzaszczewska of house, Trzaska coat of arms. At baptism he received the names: Wladyslaw, Zygmunt, Leon. Initially, he received education at home, staying mainly in the family court at Baruch, and then he attended the school of John Nepomuk Leszczynski in Warsaw and the Institute for the Nobleman. In 1857, Wladyslaw was, at his own request, a student of real gymnasium in Warsaw since the beginning of the school year 1857-1858 to June 1860. Back in 1864, Wladyslaw Kretkowski arrived in Wloclawek. Then he got a qualification as a teacher of mathematics in secondary schools . In 1865 he began his studies in Paris at the Ecole Imperiale des Ponts et Chausees. Most probably before that time he began his studies in mathematics at Sorbonne in Paris . On 18th November, 1867, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in mathematical sciences at Sorbonne and on 6th November 1868 a Diploma of the School of Roads and Bridges. At the end of 1871 he returned from France and settled in Warsaw, where he worked as an engineer and participated in the construction of the Warsaw–Vienna and Warsaw–Bydgoszcz rails. In 1878 Kretkowski obtained veniam legendi in mathematics at Lvov Polytechnical School and started work there as a private docent. In 1882, he earned his doctorate in mathematics on the basis of the thesis “About some formulas of calculus” presented in the manuscript for the assessment to gain a degree at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University. The work was reviewed by Francis Mertens and Francis Karliński. Wadyslaw Kretkowski died on 23rd July 1910 in Cracow. He was buried in the chantry at the cemetery in Kowal.},
