Differential thermo-analysis, chemical analysis, metallographic and X-ray examinations were used for studying Nd–Au alloys. The comparison between results obtained performing thermoanalysis by heating pre-annealed samples or by cooling them from the melt shows that, very often, slow rates of formation delay the equilibration of the solid phases. Following invariant equilibria were observed: Eutectic: Liq(8.8 at.% Nd) ⇄ Au + Au6Nd (800° ± 5) Peritectic: Liq(~11 at.% Nd) + Au4Nd ⇄ Au6Nd (840° ± 5) Peritectic: Liq(~13.5 at.% Nd) + Au3.6Nd ⇄ Au4Nd (898° ± 5) Melting: Au3.6Nd (liq) ⇄ Au3.6Nd (solid) (1230° ± 10) Inverted melting: Ndβ ⇄ Ndα + Liq (824° ± 5) Eutectic: Liq(~81.5 at.% Nd) ⇄ Ndα + AuNd2 (655° ± 5) Peritectic: Liq(~72.5 at.% Nd) + AuNd(?) ⇄ AuNd2 (760° ± 5) From a preliminary investigation of the 30-50 at.% alloys, it was moreover observed that a large number of transformations and reactions occur in this composition field.
