Abstract

The electrophoretic (starch gel) behaviour of non-specific esterases of the kidney and interrenal of some anurans and urodeles has been investigated. The enzymes show a molecular heterogeneity in the species studied, in the two sexes; those differences are mainly shown in a different activity of some isoenzymes (as in Rana esculenta and Bufo viridis), or sometimes also in the number of isoenzymes (as in urodeles). In some species, however, like Hyla arborea, Bufo vulgaris and Bombina bombina, the patterns are very similar in the two sexes. The results have also been discussed in the light of other relevant researches on mammalian kidney.
