The chromosome complement of an endemic species of Ephippigerid from Sicily, Uromenus riggioi, recently described by La Greca, is illustrated in the present paper. The karyotype (2 n = 23 in the male and 2 n = 24 in the female) consists of two large meta-centric pairs, nine acrocentric pairs showing a regularly decreasing length (the shorter fiveones are dot-shaped at metaphase) and two longer acrocentric X chromosomes. A single X chromosome is present in the male. These cytological findings reveal the existence of remarkable and so far unsuspected relationships between Uromenus riggioi and the Steropleurus of the elegans group (St. elegans and St. siculus). Moreover the need is also confirmed for a revision of the systematics of the Ephippigeridae family particularly in connection with the phylogenetic significance of the genera so far proposed.
