Abstract

top
An histophotometrical evaluation of the DNA content in post-kinetic nuclei has been performed in the two karyological forms of Rattus rattus (L.), i.e. the Japanese one with 42 chromosomes complement and the European one with 38 chromosomes, and in Rattus norvegicus (Erxl.). Statistically significant differences have been demonstrated between the two chromosomal forms of Rattus rattus and this datum has been discussed in order to interpret the interrelationships between karyotypic transformation and DNA content variation. Hypotheses on the evolution of the karyotype within the subgenus Rattus Fisherand taxonomical speculations have also been proposed.
