Killing's equations in dimension two and systems of finite type

Gerard Thompson — 1999

Mathematica Bohemica

A PDE system is said to be of finite type if all possible derivatives at some order can be solved for in terms lower order derivatives. An algorithm for determining whether a system of finite type has solutions is outlined. The results are then applied to the problem of characterizing symmetric linear connections in two dimensions that possess homogeneous linear and quadratic integrals of motions, that is, solving Killing's equations of degree one and two.

The integrability of a field of endomorphisms

Gerard Thompson — 2002

Mathematica Bohemica

A Theorem is proved that gives intrinsic necessary and sufficient conditions for the integrability of a zero-deformable field of endomorphisms. The Theorem is proved by reducing to a special case in which the endomorphism field is nilpotent. Many arguments used in the derivation of similar results are simplified, principally by means of using quotient rather than subspace constructions.

Solvable extensions of a special class of nilpotent Lie algebras

A. ShabanskayaGerard Thompson — 2013

Archivum Mathematicum

A pair of sequences of nilpotent Lie algebras denoted by N n , 11 and N n , 19 are introduced. Here n denotes the dimension of the algebras that are defined for n 6 ; the first term in the sequences are denoted by 6.11 and 6.19, respectively, in the standard list of six-dimensional Lie algebras. For each of N n , 11 and N n , 19 all possible solvable extensions are constructed so that N n , 11 and N n , 19 serve as the nilradical of the corresponding solvable algebras. The construction continues Winternitz’ and colleagues’ program of investigating...
