A subgroup H of a group G is inert if |H: H ∩ H g| is finite for all g ∈ G and a group G is totally inert if every subgroup H of G is inert. We investigate the structure of minimal normal subgroups of totally inert groups and show that infinite locally graded simple groups cannot be totally inert.

We show that the group of type-preserving automorphisms of any irreducible semiregular thick right-angled building is abstractly simple. When the building is locally finite, this gives a large family of compactly generated abstractly simple locally compact groups. Specialising to appropriate cases, we obtain examples of such simple groups that are locally indecomposable, but have locally normal subgroups decomposing non-trivially as direct products, all of whose factors are locally normal. ...

In classifying certain infinite groups under minimal conditions it is needed to find non-simplicity criteria for the groups under consideration. We obtain some of such criteria as a consequence of the main result of the paper and the classification of finite simple groups.
