We study dynamics of singular Lagrangian systems described by implicit differential equations from a geometric point of view using the exterior differential systems approach. We analyze a concrete Lagrangian previously studied by other authors by methods of Dirac’s constraint theory, and find its complete dynamics.

Given a Lagrangian system with non-holonomic constraints we construct an almost product structure on the tangent bundle of the configuration manifold such that the projection of the Euler-Lagrange vector field gives the dynamics of the system. In a degenerate case, we develop a constraint algorithm which determines a final constraint submanifold where a completely consistent dynamics of the initial system exists.

This paper describes some recent research on parametric problems in the calculus of variations. It explains the relationship between these problems and the type of problem more usual in physics, where there is a given space of independent variables, and it gives an interpretation of the first variation formula in this context in terms of cohomology.
