On any space-like Weingarten surface in the three-dimensional Minkowski space we introduce locally natural principal parameters and prove that such a surface is determined uniquely up to motion by a special invariant function, which satisfies a natural non-linear partial differential equation. This result can be interpreted as a solution to the Lund-Regge reduction problem for space-like Weingarten surfaces in Minkowski space. We apply this theory to linear fractional space-like Weingarten...

We prove a universal inequality between the diastole, defined using a minimax process on the one-cycle space, and the area of closed Riemannian surfaces. Roughly speaking, we show that any closed Riemannian surface can be swept out by a family of multi-loops whose lengths are bounded in terms of the area of the surface. This diastolic inequality, which relies on an upper bound on Cheeger’s constant, yields an effective process to find short closed geodesics on the two-sphere, for instance....

In this note, we prove that on a surface with Alexandrov’s curvature bounded below, the distance derives from a Riemannian metric whose components, for any p ∈ [1, 2), locally belong to W1,p out of a discrete singular set. This result is based on Reshetnyak’s work on the more general class of surfaces with bounded integral curvature.

We give an expository account of a Weierstrass type representation of the non-zero constant mean curvature surfaces in space and discuss the meaning of the representation from the point of view of partial differential equations.
