The paper deals with some mixed finite element methods on a class of anisotropic meshes based on tetrahedra and prismatic (pentahedral) elements. Anisotropic local interpolation error estimates are derived in some anisotropic weighted Sobolev spaces. As particular applications, the numerical approximation by mixed methods of the Laplace equation in domains with edges is investigated where anisotropic finite element meshes are appropriate. Optimal error estimates are obtained using some...

We consider a non-conforming stabilized domain decomposition technique for the discretization of the three-dimensional Laplace equation. The aim is to extend the numerical analysis of residual error indicators to this model problem. Two formulations of the problem are considered and the error estimators are studied for both. In the first one, the error estimator provides upper and lower bounds for the energy norm of the mortar finite element solution whereas in the second case, it also...

In this paper we combine the dual-mixed finite element method with a Dirichlet-to-Neumann mapping (given in terms of a boundary integral operator) to solve linear exterior transmission problems in the plane. As a model we consider a second order elliptic equation in divergence form coupled with the Laplace equation in the exterior unbounded region. We show that the resulting mixed variational formulation and an associated discrete scheme using Raviart-Thomas spaces are well posed,...

In this paper we propose a finite element method for the approximation of second order elliptic problems on composite grids. The method is based on continuous piecewise polynomial approximation on each grid and weak enforcement of the proper continuity at an artificial interface defined by edges (or faces) of one the grids. We prove optimal order a priori and energy type a posteriori error estimates in 2 and 3 space dimensions, and present some numerical examples.

We consider mixed finite element discretizations of second order elliptic boundary value problems. Emphasis is on the efficient iterative solution by multilevel techniques with respect to an adaptively generated hierarchy of nonuniform triangulations. In particular, we present two multilevel solvers, the first one relying on ideas from domain decomposition and the second one resulting from mixed hybridization. Local refinement of the underlying triangulations is done by efficient and...

This contribution deals with a mixed variational formulation of 3D contact problems with the simplest model involving friction. This formulation is based on a dualization of the set of admissible displacements and the regularization of the non-differentiable term. Displacements are approximated by piecewise linear elements while the respective dual variables by piecewise constant functions on a dual partition of the contact zone. The rate of convergence is established provided that...
