New mixed finite volume methods for second order eliptic problems

Similarity:

In this paper we introduce and analyze new mixed finite volume methods for second order elliptic problems which are based on (div)- approximations for the vector variable and approximations for the scalar variable. The discretization is fulfilled by combining the ideas of the traditional finite volume box method and the local discontinuous Galerkin method. We propose two different types of methods, called Methods I and II, and show that they have distinct advantages over the mixed...

We present and analyze an interior penalty method for the numerical discretization of the indefinite time-harmonic Maxwell equations in mixed form. The method is based on the mixed discretization of the curl-curl operator developed in [Houston et al., J. Sci. Comp. 22 (2005) 325–356] and can be understood as a non-stabilized variant of the approach proposed in [Perugia et al., Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Engrg. 191 (2002) 4675–4697]. We show the well-posedness of this approach and derive...

A mixed-FEM and BEM coupling for the approximation of the scattering of thermal waves in locally non-homogeneous media

This paper proposes and analyzes a BEM-FEM scheme to approximate a time-harmonic diffusion problem in the plane with non-constant coefficients in a bounded area. The model is set as a Helmholtz transmission problem with adsorption and with non-constant coefficients in a bounded domain. We reformulate the problem as a four-field system. For the temperature and the heat flux we use piecewise constant functions and lowest order Raviart-Thomas elements associated to a triangulation approximating...

Mixed finite element approximation of 3D contact problems with given friction : error analysis and numerical realization

Jaroslav Haslinger, Taoufik Sassi (2004)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

This contribution deals with a mixed variational formulation of 3D contact problems with the simplest model involving friction. This formulation is based on a dualization of the set of admissible displacements and the regularization of the non-differentiable term. Displacements are approximated by piecewise linear elements while the respective dual variables by piecewise constant functions on a dual partition of the contact zone. The rate of convergence is established provided that the...

Finite-element discretizations of a two-dimensional grade-two fluid model

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

We propose and analyze several finite-element schemes for solving a grade-two fluid model, with a tangential boundary condition, in a two-dimensional polygon. The exact problem is split into a generalized Stokes problem and a transport equation, in such a way that it always has a solution without restriction on the shape of the domain and on the size of the data. The first scheme uses divergence-free discrete velocities and a centered discretization of the transport term, whereas the...

Mixed formulation of elliptic variational inequalities and its approximation

Jaroslav Haslinger (1981)

Aplikace matematiky

Similarity:

The approximation of a mixed formulation of elliptic variational inequalities is studied. Mixed formulation is defined as the problem of finding a saddle-point of a properly chosen Lagrangian 2 on a certain convex set K x Λ . Sufficient conditions, guaranteeing the convergence of approximate solutions are studied. Abstract results are applied to concrete examples.

Mixed finite element analysis of semi-coercive unilateral contact problems with given friction

Applications of Mathematics

Similarity:

A unilateral contact 2D-problem is considered provided one of two elastic bodies can shift in a given direction as a rigid body. Using Lagrange multipliers for both normal and tangential constraints on the contact interface, we introduce a saddle point problem and prove its unique solvability. We discretize the problem by a standard finite element method and prove a convergence of approximations. We propose a numerical realization on the basis of an auxiliary “bolted” problem and the...
