The order of every finite group G can be expressed as a product of coprime positive integers m 1 , , m t such that π ( m i ) is a connected component of the prime graph of G . The integers m 1 , , m t are called the order components of G . Some non-abelian simple groups are known to be uniquely determined by their order components. As the main result of this paper, we show that the projective symplectic groups C 2 ( q ) where q > 5 are also uniquely determined by their order components. As corollaries of this result, the validities...

Let G be a group and p a prime. The subgroup generated by the elements of order different from p is called the Hughes subgroup for exponent p . Hughes [3] made the following conjecture: if H p G is non-trivial, its index in G is at most p . There are many articles that treat this problem. In the present Note we examine those of Strauss and Szekeres [9], which treats the case p = 3 and G arbitrary, and that of Hogan and Kappe [2] concerning the case when G is metabelian, and p arbitrary. A common...

A remark on a Theorem of J. G. Thompson

An important theorem by J. G. Thompson says that a finite group G is p -nilpotent if the prime p divides all degrees (larger than 1) of irreducible characters of G . Unlike many other cases, this theorem does not allow a similar statement for conjugacy classes. For we construct solvable groups of arbitrary p -lenght, in which the lenght of any conjugacy class of non central elements is divisible by p .

In the present paper, we classify groups with the same order and degree pattern as an almost simple group related to the projective special linear simple group L 2 ( 49 ) . As a consequence of this result we can give a positive answer to a conjecture of W. J. Shi and J. X. Bi, for all almost simple groups related to L 2 ( 49 ) except L 2 ( 49 ) · 2 2 . Also, we prove that if M is an almost simple group related to L 2 ( 49 ) except L 2 ( 49 ) · 2 2 and G is a finite group such that | G | = | M | and Γ ( G ) = Γ ( M ) , then G M .
