Large time behaviour of solutions to nonhomogeneous diffusion equations

This note is devoted to the study of the long time behaviour of solutions to the heat and the porous medium equations in the presence of an external source term, using entropy methods and self-similar variables. Intermediate asymptotics and convergence results are shown using interpolation inequalities, Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequalities and Csiszár-Kullback type estimates.

Some examples of the close interaction between inequalities and interpolation are presented and discussed. An interpolation technique to prove generalized Clarkson inequalities is pointed out. We also discuss and apply to the theory of interpolation the recently found facts that the Gustavsson-Peetre class P can be described by one Carlson type inequality and that the wider class P can be characterized by another Carlson type inequality with blocks.

We prove here that the Poincaré-Sobolev pointwise inequalities for the relative rearrangement can be considered as the root of a great number of inequalities in various sets not necessarily vector spaces. In particular, new interpolation inequalities can be derived.

We investigate the connection between certain logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and generalizations of Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities. A similar connection holds between reverse logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and a new class of reverse Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities.

The results are motivated by recent work by Iwaniek and Sbordone [6] on generalized Hodge decompositions. The purpose of this note is to discuss how various Sobolev spaces defined on multiple cones behave with respect to density of smooth functions, interpolation and extension/restriction to/from ℝ n .
