We study the Gromov-Hausdorff and Kadets distances between C(K)-spaces and their quotients. We prove that if the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between C(K) and C(L) is less than 1/16 then K and L are homeomorphic. If the Kadets distance is less than one, and K and L are metrizable, then C(K) and C(L) are linearly isomorphic. For K and L countable, if C(L) has a subquotient which is close enough to C(K) in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense then K is homeomorphic to a clopen subset of L. ...

One of the approaches in pattern recognition is the use of fractal geometry. The property of self-similarity of fractals has been used as a feature in several pattern recognition methods. All fractal recognition methods use global analysis of the shape. In this paper we present some drawbacks of these methods and propose fractal local analysis using partitioned iterated function systems with division. Moreover, we introduce a new fractal recognition method based on a dependence graph...

In this paper we study infinite graph-directed iterated function systems on compact metric spaces given by contractive ‘infinitesimal similitudes’. We derive formula for the Hausdorff dimension of the ‘invariant set’ for such a system in terms of the spectral radii of the naturally associated family of the ‘Perron- Frobenius operators’. The results in this paper generalizes the results obtained in [20], where finite graphdirected systems and infinite iterated function systems are considered ...

Let X be a closed subspace of c₀. We show that the metric projection onto any proximinal subspace of finite codimension in X is Hausdorff metric continuous, which, in particular, implies that it is both lower and upper Hausdorff semicontinuous.

Let (X,f) be a dynamical system. In general the set of all ω-limit sets of f is not closed in the hyperspace of closed subsets of X. In this paper we study the case when X is a graph, and show that the family of ω-limit sets of a graph map is closed with respect to the Hausdorff metric.

A net in a Hausdorff uniform space is called cofinally Cauchy if for each entourage, there exists a cofinal (rather than residual) set of indices whose corresponding terms are pairwise within the entourage. In a metric space equipped with the associated metric uniformity, if each cofinally Cauchy sequence has a cluster point, then so does each cofinally Cauchy net, and the space is called cofinally complete. Here we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the nonempty closed subsets...

The Lifshits theorem states that any k-uniformly Lipschitz map with a bounded orbit on a complete metric space X has a fixed point provided k < ϰ(X) where ϰ(X) is the so-called Lifshits constant of X. For many spaces we have ϰ(X) > 1. It is interesting whether we can use the Lifshits theorem in the theory of iterated function systems. Therefore we investigate the value of the Lifshits constant for several classes of hyperspaces.

In 1989 R. Arnold proved that for every pair (A,B) of compact convex subsets of ℝ there is an Euclidean isometry optimal with respect to L₂ metric and if f₀ is such an isometry, then the Steiner points of f₀(A) and B coincide. In the present paper we solve related problems for metrics topologically equivalent to the Hausdorff metric, in particular for metrics for all p ≥ 2 and the symmetric difference metric.

Using the wedge sum of metric spaces, for all compact metrizable spaces, we construct a topological embedding of the compact metrizable space into the set of all metric trees in the Gromov--Hausdorff space with finite prescribed values. As its application, we show that the set of all metric trees is path-connected and all its nonempty open subsets have infinite topological dimension.
