Virtual braids

Louis H. Kauffman, Sofia Lambropoulou (2004)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

This paper gives a new method for converting virtual knots and links to virtual braids. Indeed, the braiding method given here is quite general and applies to all the categories in which braiding can be accomplished. This includes the braiding of classical, virtual, flat, welded, unrestricted, and singular knots and links. We also give reduced presentations for the virtual braid group and for the flat virtual braid group (as well as for other categories). These reduced presentations...

A characterization of 2-knots groups.

Francisco González-Acuña (1994)

Revista Matemática Iberoamericana

Similarity:

A n-knot group is the fundamental group of the complement of an n-sphere smoothly embedded in Sn+2. Artin gave in 1925 ([A]) an algebraic characterization of 1-knot groups. M. Kervaire gave in 1965 ([K]) an algebraic characterization of n-knot groups for n ≥ 3. The problem of characterizing algebraically 2-knot groups has been posed several times (see for example [Su, Problem 4.7]). Ribbon 2-knot groups have been characterized algebraically by Yajima [Y]. ...

Conjugacy for positive permutation braids

Hugh R. Morton, Richard J. Hadji (2005)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

Positive permutation braids on n strings, which are defined to be positive n-braids where each pair of strings crosses at most once, form the elementary but non-trivial building blocks in many studies of conjugacy in the braid groups. We consider conjugacy among these elementary braids which close to knots, and show that those which close to the trivial knot or to the trefoil are all conjugate. All such n-braids with the maximum possible crossing number are also shown to be conjugate. ...

Virtual biquandles

Louis H. Kauffman, Vassily O. Manturov (2005)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

We describe new approaches for constructing virtual knot invariants. The main background of this paper comes from formulating and bringing together the ideas of biquandle [KR], [FJK], the virtual quandle [Ma2], the ideas of quaternion biquandles by Roger Fenn and Andrew Bartholomew [BF], the concepts and properties of long virtual knots [Ma10], and other ideas in the interface between classical and virtual knot theory. In the present paper we present a new algebraic construction of virtual...

Positive knots, closed braids and the Jones polynomial

Alexander Stoimenow (2003)

Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa - Classe di Scienze

Similarity:

Using the recent Gauß diagram formulas for Vassiliev invariants of Polyak-Viro-Fiedler and combining these formulas with the Bennequin inequality, we prove several inequalities for positive knots relating their Vassiliev invariants, genus and degrees of the Jones polynomial. As a consequence, we prove that for any of the polynomials of Alexander/Conway, Jones, HOMFLY, Brandt-Lickorish-Millett-Ho and Kauffman there are only finitely many positive knots with the same polynomial and no...

Virtual Legendrian isotopy

Vladimir Chernov, Rustam Sadykov (2016)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

An elementary stabilization of a Legendrian knot L in the spherical cotangent bundle ST*M of a surface M is a surgery that results in attaching a handle to M along two discs away from the image in M of the projection of the knot L. A virtual Legendrian isotopy is a composition of stabilizations, destabilizations and Legendrian isotopies. A class of virtual Legendrian isotopy is called a virtual Legendrian knot. In contrast to Legendrian knots, virtual Legendrian knots...

Virtual knot theory-unsolved problems

Roger Fenn, Louis H. Kauffman, Vassily O. Manturov (2005)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

Similarity:

The present paper gives a quick survey of virtual and classical knot theory and presents a list of unsolved problems about virtual knots and links. These are all problems in low-dimensional topology with a special emphasis on virtual knots. In particular, we touch new approaches to knot invariants such as biquandles and Khovanov homology theory. Connections to other geometrical and combinatorial aspects are also discussed.
